The strength of BigCommerce is definitely that it does not apply any sales commissions, only maintaining the licensing cost.

The ability to open "storefronts" for managing different catalogs or countries other than the origin is a paid feature.

Template & Design

The platform's performance is consistently excellent, making user experience one of Shopify's strengths. There are numerous templates to choose from, and the community is highly active. Customizing templates and their functionalities is intuitive, even for advanced customizations.

In terms of performance and template availability, BigCommerce is very similar to Shopify. In some projects, customization possibilities and out-of-the-box solutions are even more achievable compared to Shopify. Currently, the gap separating BigCommerce from Shopify lies in the fact that advanced customizations require more technical expertise.

Cart & Checkout

The cart can be fully customized in Shopify. What cannot be customized is the checkout process. To access checkout customizations, along with many other features, subscribing to the Plus+ plan at €2,000/month is required. Even though the checkout process isn't fully customizable, its layout and structure make it one of the best templates available.

Unlike Shopify, BigCommerce allows customization without limitations for both the cart and checkout in all currently available plans. The standard checkout, similar to Shopify's, is excellent, highly appreciated by customers, and generates high conversion rates.

Marketing & SEO

The standard SEO optimization offered by the platform is interesting and sufficient to have a site that is "liked" by search engines. Without significant customization margins, even with the multiple applications available in the store that manage some SEO aspects, functionalities such as managing canonical tags and editing sitemap.xml are currently not present.

Native integrations work very well for advertising, unlike some integrations related to tracking and marketing automation. However, these shortcomings are well compensated for by the presence of useful and comprehensive but paid applications.

In terms of SEO, BigCommerce seems to have a slight edge over Shopify's configuration, despite some functionalities (canonical and sitemap) not being managed natively. However, the existing functionalities are more than sufficient to complete an "optimized" website.

In its native integrations, BigCommerce is very similar to Shopify. The significant difference between the two lies in the presence of applications in the store: while Shopify offers multiple apps with various functionalities, BigCommerce does not provide a wide selection, especially for tracking purposes.
